Ewing Baldwin

Ewing E. Baldwin, 84, died September 25, 2009 at 10:20 a.m. at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis County. He was born July 2, 1925 in Vandalia, IL, the son of the late Frederick and Olive Baldwin. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from November 2, 1943 to January 9, 1946. After over 30 years of service with the United States Postal service, Ewing became a Real Estate Appraiser and was the President of the Southwestern Illinois Chapter NAIFA. After selling his appraisal business, Ewing volunteered with several organizations. Ewing married the former Marlene Ham in Godfrey in 1969 and was married to her for forty years. Ewing often said that "she was the best thing that ever happened to me." In addition to his wife Marlene, he is survived by his son, E. Eugene Baldwin Jr. of Chicago, his daughter, Kathryn "Kathy" Glassbrenner and her husband Paul of Roanoke, VA, their sons, Jason, Stephen, David, and their wives, and one great grandson, Haiden. With is marriage to Marlene, he became a beloved step father to Jean Nasello and her husband John of Bethalto, and their children, Michelle "Micki" Davis of S. Roxanna, John of Oregon, and Adam of Bethalto; Mark (Jean) Nelson and their three children, Sgt. Christopher (Sarah) of Hawaii, Lee (Chelsea) of Springfield, and Jennifer Nelson of Godfrey; Theresa (Michael) Hubbert and her children, Brandy Torres, and her three children, Joseph Torres and his three children, the three children of the late Marc Torres; Patricia Timmermeire (Frank) of Alton and their four children, Brian (Rachelle), and their child, Robert, Sarah and her child, Landen, and Carl all of Alton, and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a niece, Dr. Nancy Summers of Michigan, nephews, Charles Summers of Godfrey and his child, and Frederick "Buddy" Summers of Alton. A brother-in-law, David "Dick" (Shirley) Ham of Alton, sisters-in-law, Thelma (John) Turner of Dothan, AL, Donna (Edgar Sr.) McCleary of Jerseyville, and their two children, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a beloved brother, Frederick B. Summers. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Community Christian Church in Alton. Pastor Tom Cater will officiate. Burial will be at Shipman Cemetery in Shipman, IL with Military Honors by the VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Community Christian Church.
