Dale F. "Jake" Long, 77, died at 4:51 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton. Born June 9, 1932 in Alton, he was the son of Joseph Willard and Mary Elizabeth (Breyfogle) Long. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Alton and enjoyed camping and traveling. He retired from Shell Oil Company after 30 years of service. On August 12, 1955 in Alton, he married the former Ruth L. Graveman. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Galyen and her husband David K. of East Alton, and a son, Brian Long, and his fiancé Nannette Morgan and her son, Michael Stephens of Bethalto, a grandchild, and a brother, Richard Long and his wife Ruth Leona of Godfrey. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Long who was killed in action during WWII. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Reverend Randy Fisher will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church.
