Claire M. Purcell, 90, passed away peacefully at 4:10 AM Wednesday September 2, 2009 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.
She was born April 27, 1919 in Alton the daughter of William and Marie (Hechler) Stone.
She married Donald J Purcell on March 11, 1942 in Ferguson, MO. He preceded her in death in 2000. Claire was in the first class to graduate from Alton Memorial School of nursing. She was honored to know Eunice Smith personally and was included in the hospital's 70th year celebration. She was a registered nurse working at Alton Memorial Hospital and many Doctor's offices through out the area retiring in 1987. She was a member of the College Avenue Presbyterian Church for 79 years.
She is survived by three sons and their wives, Michael and Sherri Fox-Purcell of Fort Pierce, FL, Patrick and Marla Purcell of Godfrey, D.J. and Kay Wallick-Purcell of Big Horn, WY; three grandchildren Lindsey Purcell Lebovitz, Jed Purcell, Tess Purcell; two sisters, Louise Norman and Dorothy Crabtree.
In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by one granddaughter Abby Purcell and her brother, William Stone.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday September 7, 2009 at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey where funeral services will be held at 10:00 Tuesday September 8, 2009 with Rev. Janet Riley officiating.
Graveside services will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
Memorials may be directed to College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton.
