Duane Randall, 63, passed away Tuesday June 9, 2009 at 10:55 a.m. peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Alton, IL on April 27, 1946, to Duane Sr. and Rosemary (Miller) Randall, he spent his childhood in places as widely varied as Caracas, Venezuela and Moab, Utah. He moved back to Alton in 1960 and played varsity sports at Marquette Catholic High School. His uncle, Louis Miller, Lockhaven's first golf pro, helped Duane procure a job as a caddie at Lockhaven Country Club, which began a lifelong interest in golf. He graduated from Alton Senior High School in 1964. Following in his father's footsteps, he graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1970 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and created a legacy his daughter Elisabeth continued.
Duane married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Ann Cannedy, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton on June 21, 1968. In the following years, the Randalls lived in a number of Midwestern cities and in Miami, FL, during which time Duane worked in several industries, including medical and office equipment sales.
The Randalls returned to the Alton area with their three children in 1987. As a member of Lockhaven, Duane's contribution to and enthusiasm for the club were unparalleled. He and Nancy built a home overlooking the golf course in 1992, and Duane served on the board of Lockhaven from 1998-2004, including a term as president from 2003-2004. Following his presidency, Duane became a board member of the Lockhaven Country Club Development Corporation.
Working for over twenty years in the aviation industry, Duane built a successful entreprenurial career. He was often accompanied by his wife as he traveled, and the two formed close friendships with Duane's associates throughout Europe and Asia. Duane and his son Joseph founded an aircraft fabric company, AviorTex, in 2007.
In 2001, Duane aided his daughter Elisabeth in opening a coffeeshop on Broadway, which initiated his involvement in realizing the great potential of the downtown Alton area. Duane first converted the Laura Building into riverview lofts and commercial spaces overlooking the Mississippi river; he and his wife occupied the top floor. Assisted by his daughter Jennifer and business partner Penelope Schmidt, Duane continued these efforts at the Mississippi Lime building, now known as the Mississippi Landing.
Surviving family members include his devoted wife, Nancy; his daughter Jennifer and her husband, Steven Papin, and his grandchildren, Emily, Joseph, and Betsy Papin; his son Joseph and daughter-in-law Rebecca; and his daughter Elisabeth, all of whom live in the Alton area. Also surviving are two sisters, Louise Jehle and her husband, Jackson, of Godfrey; Martha Black and her husband, Robert, of Miami, Florida; a brother-in-law Jon Canaday of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; and a large extended family including Pat Kane and his wife Dottie and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends here in Alton and throughout the world remember Duane as a Business mentor, wonderful conversationalist and storyteller, and dedicated golfer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister; Ann Canaday.
Per his wishes cremation rites were accorded.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday June 11, 2009 at 10 am, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, Il. Father Shawn Monahan will officiate.
