Arthur Lowenstein

Arthur W. Lowenstein, 86, passed away at 6:43 p.m., Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
Born Sept. 5, 1922 in Moro, he was the son of Daniel and Anna (Hahnenkamp) Lowenstein.
His marriage to Jean Samuel took place on Oct. 22, 1948 at the Kane Baptist Church. She survives.
He worked at Curtis Wright Aircraft before his employment at McDonnell-Douglas, where he worked for 38 years. He retired in December of 1986. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers #866 for 45 years.
A member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto since 1937, he designed and installed the sound system in the brick church when it was built in 1957. He was chairman of the Sound System Committee for more than 50 years, and was involved in the updating of the equipment in 1996. He was a professional photographer for some years, keeping his camera and equipment upgraded as new products came along.
Art and his wife embarked on their first overseas trip in 1968 when they visited schools in Europe. Their next trip to Europe included visiting churches. Then they found their true love right in the U.S.: Hawaii. Other travels included Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong, interspersed with trips back to Europe and Hawaii. Art always had his camera ready to take pictures on his travels.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nephews and their wives, Eugene and Wallene Lowenstein of Florissant, Mo. and Terry and Deb Lowenstein of Holiday Shores; and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ervin, Edward, and Paul Lowenstein; a nephew, Dale Lowenstein; and a niece, Carolyn Smith.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, and will continue Thursday, Sept. 3 at Zion Lutheran Church from noon until time of services at 1 p.m. Reverends Mark Hofferber and Willard V. Meyer will officiate.
Interment will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Sound System.
