Robert "Bobby" Wayne Hayes Sr

Robert "Bobby" Wayne Hayes Sr., 68, died at 11:35 a.m., Friday, August 28, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Grafton on May 31, 1941, and was the son of the late Freeman & Ila Marie (Vanausdoll) Hayes. Bob was raised in Grafton, and graduated from Jersey Community High School.  Shortly after graduation, he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps, and after his discharge he married Rae Stewart on Aug. 19, 1961 in Torrance, Ca., and the two made their home their for many years before relocating to Grafton in Jan. 2000. While in Torrance, Bob was employed with Santee Dairies of Los Angeles, where he was employed as a route salesman for 32 years before retiring in 1994.  He also was a member of the executive board of Teamsters Local #63 in Los Angeles. A member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Grafton, he also enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors.  He was especially fond of hunting, raising mallard & geese until they were strong enough to be released back into nature, fishing, and golfing, and enjoyed bowling, woodwoorking and tinkering in his workshop, as well as spending time with his buddies with the Grafton Birdhouse Gang. Surviving are his wife, Rae Hayes of Grafton; three sons & daughters in law, Robert W. & Rebecca Hayes Jr., and Joseph Todd & Danine Hayes all of Torrance, Ca., and Scott Matthew & Janet Hayes of Fullerton, Ca.; his eight grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and was their biggest fan, Jon Garland, Ashley, Nicholas, Zachary, Samuel, Carina, Matthew and Spencer Hayes; a brother & sister in law, Gary & Ann Hayes of Grafton;  a brother, Bryon Laubscher of Collinsville; his step father & his wife, Harold & JoAnn Laubscher of Grafton; and a former daughter in law, Lisa Garland of Gardena, Ca. He was preceded in death by his father, Freeman Hayes; his mother, Ila Marie Laubscher; an infant brother, Olney Freeman Hayes; a sister & brother in law, Louise & Edward Baecht. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton with Fr. Patrick Gibbons officiating.   Grafton American Legion Post 648 will conduct military honors immediately after the mass. Cremation will take place following the services. Memorials may be given to the St. Anthony's Hospice.
