OCCUPATION: She was a voracious reader. She was known around town as the girl who walked down the street reading a book. She even attempted, at times unsuccessfully, to read a book while riding a bicycle. Margaret was a graduate of Jersey Township High School with the class of 1947, she worked during her school days at the Stadium Theater and what was then Jerseyville's only telephone provider, Jerseyville Tel Co, Inc. She began her career as a switchboard operator and worked her way up to supervisor. In 1957, General Telephone and Electronics acquired the company and Margaret continued working in Jerseyville until 1959 when she transferred to Monmouth, Illinois as Assistant Chief Operator. GTE's corporate offices in Bloomington, Illinois became her permanent assignment in 1965 when she accepted the position of Toll Investigator. Margaret retired the 31st day of May, 1990 after 44 years of service. Although she lived away from Jerseyville, she maintained her membership in the Jerseyville chapter of The Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years. In 1998 she moved back to Jerseyville where she enjoyed the pool at the Wellness Center, the Jerseyville Public Library, and her extended family.
