Esther E. Gebelein, 94, went to be with her Lord at 5:03 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 with her family by her side.
Born Oct. 18, 1914 in Stockton, Kan., she was the daughter of Henry and Ursula (Tschudi) Kuelper.
She married Howard J. Gebelein June 12, 1937 in Labadie, Mo. He passed away May 3, 1999.
A school teacher for the Roxana School District, she retired in 1975.
She was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma Education Society, a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Assoc., and a past member of the Women's Christian Society. She also was a 50 year member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Wood River, and had been a longtime volunteer at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra.
Survivors include daughters, two surviving granddaughters, Elizabeth Gebelein and a son-in-law, Marion Skundrich of Bethalto and Sylvia and Dale Nichols of Edwardsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, John H. and Linda Gebelein of East Alton and Don E. and Pat Gebelein of Fairfield, Ohio; her grandchildren and their spouses, Lynette and Dennis Factor, Tom and Deb Nichols, Brian and Paula Gebelein, Donna and Ryan Green, and Pamela Gebelein; great grandchildren, Julia and Elizabeth Nichols, Zachary Factor, Isabella Ilch, Myah and Hallie Gebelein, and Ashleigh and Ellie Green; a sister, Ruth Schultz of Bonner Springs, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, and will continue Wednesday, Aug. 19 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Wood River from 9 a.m. until time of services at 10 a.m. Rev. Dr. David Beebe will officiate.
Interment will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the church.
