John F. "Smitty" Smith Jr.

John F. "Smitty" Smith Jr., 65, formerly of West Alton, MO, died at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Christian Hospital North East in St. Louis, MO. Born August 13, 1943 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of John F. Smith Sr. and Marie C. (Cunningham) Smith. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1966. He was a retired dairy worker for the Kroger Company out of Local 600 in Hazelwood, MO. He was a member of the Alton Eagles Foe No. 254, and the VFW Post 1308. On July 2, 1966 in St. Louis, MO, he married the former Stella Hoynacki. He was her beloved husband for 43 years. Also surviving are two brothers, George H. Smith and his wife Paula of Wood River, and James A. "Art" Smith and his wife Elizabeth of Louisiana. He was a loving uncle, great uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Monday. The Chaplain from the Alton Eagles Foe No. 254 will officiate. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
