Bernard Springman

Bernard W. Springman, 86, passed away at 8:35 am Wednesday August 5, 2009 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton while under the care of BJC Hospice.

He was born on October 2, 1922 in Alton, the son of John Joseph & Marie (Wood) Springman Sr.

He married Harriet Meyers on June 23, 1945 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton. She preceded him in death on December 7, 1998.

He was the Chairman of the Board at Springman Lumber Company and retired in 1983.

He graduated in 1940 from Marquette Catholic High School in Alton and then attended the University of Illinois for two years until he was drafted into the Army where he served during WWII.

He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton and was a member of the Alton Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th degree Knight. He was the Past President and Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis International and Past Board Member of the Salvation Army and Our Lady of the Rivers; he was also a real estate developer in the Alton Area.

He is survived by four children and spouses, Jack Springman of Godfrey, Bernard R. & Carol J. Springman of Godfrey, Dell M. Kelby of Bryan, TX, and Matt & Erin Springman of Ballwin, MO; five grandchildren and a spouse, Jennifer & Josh Farley of Evansville, IN, Christopher Kelby and Mary Beth Kelby, both of Bryan, TX, Kevin Springman of Omaha NE, and Mary Kate Springman of Rochester, MN; four great grandchildren, Reiley, Oscar, Guss and Harry Farley of Evansville, IN; one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas & Jeanne Springman of Brighton; and one sister and brother-in-law, Angela & Don Springer of Herman, MO.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, John Springman Jr. and and a sister, Virginia Wegner.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday August 7, 2009 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton where a rosary service will be held at immediately followed by a eulogy service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Saturday August 8, 2009 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. Delix Michel SSL celebrating.

Burial will follow at St. Denis Cemetery in Shipman, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
