William A. Stone, 84, stepped into eternity with his Lord at 10:08 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at his home. Born September 16, 1924 in Alton, he was the son of William Nicholas Leony Stone and Marie (Heckler) Stone. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton, where he served the Lord as an Elder and he led the youth group. He was an avid hunter and golfer for many years. He enjoyed playing pool at the Eagles and VFW as a pass time. He retired in 1991 after 31 ½ years of service as a towboat operator for the Norman Brother's Barge Company. On May 3, 1946 in Alton, he married the former Mary Louise Thatcher. She preceded him in death on October 10, 1987. Surviving is a son, Mark W. Stone and his wife Sue of Godfrey, five grandchildren; Nikki Hurst, Tony Stone, Kristen Luebbert, Maddie Meyer, and Abbie Meyer, one great grandchild, Olivia Meyer, and a great grandchild, Landon Luebbert, due any day, and three sisters; Anna Louise Norman, Claire Purcell, and Dorothy Crabtree all of Godfrey. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Pastor Mark W. Stone will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with military honors by the Alton VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
