Maurice Roberts

Maurice R. Roberts, age 83, went to be with the Lord at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at St. Clare's Extended Care.

He was born on August 9, 1925 in Alton, IL, the son of the late Richard V. & Margaret C. (Schelle) Roberts.

He married Bernice T. Schmidt at St. Mary's Catholic in Alton on November 8, 1947. She survives.

Maurie was a graduate of Shurtleff College receiving his Bachelors Degree in 1950. He served in the United States Navy Air Corps from 1943 until 1945. He was employed at Olin Corporation in Sales and Marketing for thirty-three years, retiring in 1982. He later accepted an appointment by Bishop McNicholas to serve as coordinator at Marian Heights Apartments in Alton, and served on its Board. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, the St. Vincent DePaul Society and Alton Knights of Columbus where he was a third degree knight. Caring for and spending time with his wife, parents, children and grandchildren was always his priority.

Maurice is survived by ten children and their spouses, Mike & Lisa Roberts of Alton, Fr. Don Roberts of Meppen, IL, Debbie Roberts of Florissant, MO, Terri & Rick Martin of Raytown, MO, Jim & Stacey Roberts of Bloomsdale, MO, Jeff & Sandra Roberts of Dow, Jeanne & Joe Hoefert of Godfrey, Marci & Eric Wendle of Godfrey, Andy Roberts of Alton and Mary & John Johnson of Pineville, NC; twenty-nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one sister Marilyn (Roberts) Aulabaugh of Alton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dale Roberts, and one brother-in-law, Gale Aulabaugh.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on July 31, 2009 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home, 1313 West Delmar, Godfrey. A private rosary service will be held at 3:30 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton on Saturday, August 1, 2009 with Father Don Roberts officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton, IL, with military rites being preformed by the Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church and Alzheimer Association.
