Roy Delp

Roy W. Delp, 81, passed away at 12:56 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Willow Rose Rehab & Health Care in Jerseyville while under the care of St. Anthony's Hospice.

He was born on March 20, 1928 in Jerseyville, Illinois, the son of Roy E. & Alice M. (Scoggins) Delp

Roy and Erika (Stegmann) met in her home town, where he was stationed in Ober-Ramstadt, Germany on March 29, 1947. She came over to the USA in August 1949 and two weeks later they were married on August 20, 1949. They celebrated 59 years of marriage. She survives.

Roy served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII in Germany were he received a Victory Medal and also during the Korean Conflict where he received a Korean Service Medal and 2 Bronze Service Stars. He worked as a shipping foreman for Owens Illinois Glass Company for 44 ½ years retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Bethalto First Baptist Church. A lifetime member of the Alton VFW Post 1308, a member of the Alton Eagles F.O.E. 254 and he loved to travel in the United States and Europe. He enjoyed boxing, baseball, football, reading and most of all spending time with his family. He also loved to keep in touch with his army buddies.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his 5 children and their spouses, Larry Delp of Godfrey, Shirley & Randy Durbin of East Alton, Norman Delp and Lana Scheffel of Brighton, Roger & Tina Delp of Brighton and Renate & Phil Stassi of Roxana; 9 grandchildren, Carrie, Julie E., Jason, Kyle, Erin, Stephanie, Valerie, Kimberly and Julie D.; 11 great grandchildren, 3 sisters & two brothers-in-law, Betty Landers of Wood River, Pearlie & Don Runion of Worden and Dixie & Paul Baldwin of Medora and a brother and sister-in-law, Marvin & Gloria Delp of East Alton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Damon Delp.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 5 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Visitation will continue from 9 am to funeral services at 10 am on Friday, July 10, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Chip Faulkner officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to the Bethalto First Baptist Church Building Fund.
