Rodger W. Martin age 72, went to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 1:35 p.m. at his residence with his family by his side.
He was born in Alton on August 26, 1936, son of the late John Martin and Florence (Narup) Thurman.
Rodger served in the United States Army. He was employed at Owens Illinois retiring as a Selective Maintenance Foreman in 1991 after 38 years. He retired while living in Lakeland, FL. His children and grandchildren will always remember him as the best hook-baiting, fish catching, coin collecting, lawn mowing, story telling, mushroom hunting, vegetable growing, baby sitting papa ever.
He married Theresa (Chontofalsky) Martin on September 23rd 1961, spending 48 years of marriage together. She always thought of him as a best friend, love and hero.
He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Rodger and Carol Martin of York, Maine and Rodney and Francy Martin of Godfrey; two daughters, Sabrina Webb and Julia Ansell both of Godfrey; six grandchildren, Danielle, Ryan, Lauren, Tyler, Austin and Hunter; one brother, Tony Martin of Alton and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patricia West of Alton and Judy and Gordon McConnell of Anaheim Calf.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step father, Walter Thurman and one sister, Margaret Young.
Visitation will be from 3 pm until memorial service at 6 pm, on Friday, July 3, 2009 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton with Fr. Peter Donohoe officiating.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Liver Foundation.
