Virginia H. Russo, 98, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at her home in Godfrey.
Born December 19, 1910 in Trotwood, Ohio, she was the daughter of John Rae and Maude Ethel (Hyre) Hoffman.
She married Joseph A. Russo in June of 1946 at Knoxville, TN. He died in January 2005. They came to the Alton/Godfrey area after their marriage where he was first associated with Monticello College. Mrs. Russo graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, IL in 1932 and did graduate work at Columbia University in New York.
Her first employment was with the Tennessee Valley Authority (T.V.A.) where she worked until her marriage. When they came to this area she worked first in the Alton school system and then taught in the East Alton school system until her retirement.
The Russo's became involved in the community and were some of the earliest members of the Sierra Club. They were active members of the First Unitarian Church since 1955. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
There will be no services. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
