Mary M. Speed, 85, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
Born August 15, 1923 in Melrose, Iowa, she was the daughter of Everett and Nina (Clark) Murphy.
A member of the Daughters of Isabella, she married Ellsworth Speed Jan. 8, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away in April of 1998.
Surviving are 4 daughters, Lynette Berigan of Alton, Patricia Higdon of South Roxana, Diane Hauser and her husband Bill of Memphis, Tenn., and Maureen Swiney and her husband Bruce of Arnold, Mo.; her grandchildren, Jeff and Katie Buydos, Ashley Berigan, Clayton and Tara Higdon, Carly Higdon, Spencer and Samantha Hauser, and Steven and Jenna Swiney; and a brother, James Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Irene Murphy, Pearl Hargrave, and Genevieve Murphy; four brothers, John, Paul, Edward, and Pat Murphy; and two sons-in-law, Fred Higdon and Patrick Berigan.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights.
Father James Flach will celebrate a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
