Glenna Pickett

Alton |

Glenna Sue Pickett, 50, went to be with the Lord at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Barnes Jewish Hospital with her family by her side.
She was born on February 19, 1958, in Wood River, the daughter of Glen & Polly (Tarrant) Schoeneweis. Her father preceded her in death on June 11, 1996.
She married David M. Pickett on December 6, 1980, in Champaign-Urbana. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1989.
She graduated from Civic Memorial High School in 1976, Eastern Illinois University in 1980, and SIUE in 1991. She was a beloved teacher in the Alton School District since 1991 and in Gibson City from 1981-1990. She was a dedicated champion for children and a special friend to those with whom she worked. She was a past president of the Alton Education Association and represented that group in the Illinois Education Association Region 6 Council. She was the IEA Region 6 recipient of the Acknowledging Local Leaders Award in 2004. She was chief negotiator and an active member of the AEA P.N. Committee for 10 years. She also represented the AEA at numerous state and national conventions and was very proud of the district's "Wall-to-Wall" membership. Many colleagues recall her efforts in the creation of the district's sick leave bank, which helped members in great times of need. She did so much for others that it is difficult to remember everything about her.
She is survived by one daughter, Ashley L. Pickett of Tuscaloosa, AL; her mother, Polly Schoeneweis of Bethalto; her sister, Paula J. (Anthony) Settles of Port Royal, SC; her brother, Ron G. (Bonnie) Schoeneweis of Escondido, CA; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and hundreds of students whom she impacted through her 28 years of teaching.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ashley Pickett or Alton West Elementary for a memorial in Glenna's honor at Alton West Elementary.
