Full Name: Richard L. "Dick" Downer

Age: 81

Died: passed away at 1:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Edwardsville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Born: Sept. 17, 1926 in Hartford to Frank and Thelma (Sparks) Downer.

Married: Virginia Braddy Dec. 10, 1955 in Hartford. She survives.

Veteran: served in WWII and the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Navy.

Occupation: He retired in January, 1989 as an operator for Illinois Power Co., but had previously worked for Shell Oil Co. and the U.S. Postal Service.

Mmbrshps: A member of the Wood River VFW and the Lewis & Clark Society, he also wasa loyal member and past governor of the Wood River Moose Lodge #1349. He worked with youth groups in Hartford, managing Little League baseball teams, and also played for many area baseball and softball leagues and teams himself. He was an avid bowler and loyal St. Louis Cardinal fan who enjoyed golfing in his retired years with many friends and family.

Survivors: In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Richard and Patty Downer of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Roger and Joli Downer of Edwardsville, Teresa and Paul Murfin of Lancaster, Penn., and Ramona and Kevin Waltz of Godfrey; 12 grandchildren, Timothy and Erin Downer, Shalyn (Downer) Jackson and her husband Kevin, Whitney Downer, Mindee (Miller) Calabrese and her husband James, Lynsey Miller, Alex and Jacob Murfin, Turner and Drew Marquis, Kayce Waltz and Lauren (Waltz) Smith and her husband Jason; 6 great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Hayes Voyles, Egan and Zachary Calabrese, Carter Jackson and Deyton Smith; a sister, Rose King of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Donna Downer of Chesterfield, Mo..

Preceded by: his parents; an infant son, Jerry Michael Downer; and a grandson, Timothy Bryan Downer.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights

Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home

Clergy: Rev. Dan Smith

Burial: Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Bethalto

Memorials: may be given to the Alzheimer's Assoc. or the American Heart Assoc.
