Eileen Dunn

Eileen Murphy Dunn, 95, died at 12:50 p.m., Tuesday August 5, 2008 at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur after a brief illness.

A native of Charleston S.C., she was the daughter of Richard and Ellen (Flynn) Murphy.

She was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton, and was dedicated to the rosary and to the missions and never missed an opportunity to do works of charity teaching her children by her example never to turn their backs on anyone in need. She was educated by the Sisters of Mercy and graduated from Bishop England High School in Charleston. From the age of sixteen she was a soloist in St. Joseph's Church choir and was known locally for her beautiful contralto voice. She worked briefly as a secretary for Southern Railroad before her marriage to Paul Dunn in 1934. After her marriage she was a full-time homemaker completely devoted to her husband and children.

She is survived by and will be sadly missed by her husband of 74 years, Paul Keith Dunn of Alton, a son, Richard Dunn and wife Margie, two daughters, Patricia Horn of Alton and Eileen Daly and her husband Thomas of Alton, six grandchildren, Michael Dunn and his wife Bo of Alton, Janice Dunphy and her husband Chris of Godfrey, Rick Dunn and his wife Trinity of Godfrey, Stephen Horn of Surfside, Florida, Ellen (Horn) Lancia and her husband Anthony of St. Louis, and Patrick Daly of Alton, eight great grandchildren, Joseph and Katie Dunn, Nicholas and Natalie Dunphy, Justin and Danielle Dunn, Gabriel and Lauren Lancia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richard and William Murphy, a sister, Margaret Murphy, and a daughter, Pauline, who died in childhood.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. Anthony C. Daly, S.J. celebrating.

Graveside services will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Charleston South Carolina.
