Major Carl Franklin Freeman, age 83 of Maryville, IL, born March 12, 1939 in Montgomery, AL, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Carl attended the University of Alabama where he played in the Million Dollar Band.  He was a proud alumni and Alabama football fan. ROLL TIDE!!

Carl was retired from the United States Air Force.  During his time, he was decorated with many honors including Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.  He was a Ham radio operator, a firearms enthusiast, photographer, loved boating, gardening, and animals.  He was a motorcyclist and a civil servant.  He was a member of the Troy United Methodist Church and was a certified United Methodist Lay Minister. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnie Franklin and Mary (nee Trammell) Freeman.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 63 years, Angeline "Brooksie" (nee Lunsford) Freeman, whom he married June 8, 1959; five children:  Frank (Robin) Freeman, Jim (Linda) Freeman, Chris (Candi) Freeman, Angeline Freeman Fleming and Alicia (Javier) Morales; 16 grandchildren:  Eric (Heather) Freeman, Elliot Freeman, Jenna (Josh) Waller, Andrea Freeman, Kristie Freeman, Logan Freeman, Jamie (Zach Kinsey) Freeman, Nathan (Ariel) Morales, Nicholas Morales, Olivia Morales, Taylor Fleming, Jayson Fleming, Ian Freeman, Parker Fleming, Grant Fleming, and Sophia Fleming; 9 great-grandchildren:  Ailee Murphy, Noah Freeman, Ashton Kinsey, Weston Freeman, Maverick Freeman, Finn Kinsey, Selah Freeman, Beckett Waller and Atlas Tracy; a sister, Alice Reaves; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lunsford; a nephew, George Reaves IV; and a niece, Mary (nee Reaves) Uhles.

Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2022 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL.

Funeral service will be at 12 noon on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at the funeral home with Rev. Andy Adams officiating.  Burial with military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.

Memorials may be made to Troy United Methodist Church or the Metro East Humane Society and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
