Sylvia Smyth

Sylvia J. Smyth, 82 of Edwardsville, Illinois passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022, at Christian North East Hospital in St. Louis.

Sylvia was born on January 21, 1939, in Sparta, Illinois; the daughter of the late Roy E. and Rose M. (Morrow) Pierce. Sylvia gave 14 years as a telephone operator for South Western Bell and was wife, mom, and grandmother to her family. She was an active member of Center Grove Presbyterian Church in Edwardsville and in her free time, Sylvia enjoyed her days of quilting and cooking for her family and friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and will be remembered for all the special times they shared together.

Sylvia is survived by and will be missed by her sons and daughters-in-law; Roy and Carol Smyth of Charleston, West Virginia, Joe and Karen Smyth of Edwardsville, Illinois, Gary and Joan Smyth of Plainfield, Illinois; grandchildren, Mallory and Patrick Quirke of Chicago, Illinois, Danielle and Eric Reigelsberger of Delray Beach, Florida, Zachary and Brandon; brothers, Sam Pierce, Larry Pierce, Dave Pierce; sister, Beatrice Hennrich and many nieces, nephews and other close family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband; Willard H. Smyth, whom she married on October 27, 1956, in Sparta, Illinois; grandsons, Cole Smyth, Willard Smyth; 9 brothers and sisters, Ruby, Bud, Jim, Vern, John, Margie, Betty, Ronnie, and Mary.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon. In celebration of Sylvia’s life, visitation will continue on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at Center Grove Presbyterian Church, 6279 Center Grove Road in Edwardsville with Pastor Wes James officiating. Family and friends are invited to meet at Cutler City Cemetery, 2187-2193 State Route 150 in Cutler, Illinois for a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. following the services at Center Grove Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Christians Teaching Christians, P.O. Box 414, Greer, SC 29652 or you can donate online at christiansteachingchristians.com.
