Penny Souto

Collinsville |

Penny passed away Monday, June 14, 2021 surrounded by the love of her friends and family.  Penny fought her battle with cancer valiantly with the strength of a warrior, up until she took her final breath.

Penny was born November 28, 1964 in Belleville, IL to Elmer and Betty Grimes at Belleville Memorial Hospital.  Penny grew up in Caseyville and attended Collinsville High School, class of 1982.

She was happily married to Vince Souto in 1987 and traveled with him while he served in the Air Force.  After, they had a happy life in Collinsville, IL.  Vince was unexpectedly taken away from here in August 1998.

Penny worked at Lewis Rice in St. Louis as a legal assistant from January 1996 until she retired July 2020.  She always poured her heart and soul into her work.

In 2003, she met Brian Hayes and her life would never be the same.  As we like to say, Brian brought her back to life.  Brian pushed Penny out of her comfort zone, taught her how to jet ski, drive a boat, fish and many other amazing things that brought her out of her shell.  Penny loved to plan things and make people happy.  She was known best for being the party planner.  She was known for “accessorizing everyone!”  She and Brian were often in matching outfits and all the men in the group would always wear what Penny wanted.

Penny touched so many lives and was loved by all.  She made the best out of any situation.  Penny has left a piece of herself in everyone she touched.

“Penny Lane” is survived by her fiance, Brian Hayes of Collinsville, IL; brother, Mark Grimes of Collinsville, IL; her extended family, Vince Souto, Deenen Bello and her husband Carl Bello, Krista Souto, Laurie Hays and her husband Brian Hays; and three nephews: Thomas, Matthew and Nicholas.  In addition, she is survived by her fiance’s daughters, Staci Horton, Brittany (Timmy) Plemons and Brianna Hayes; five grandchildren:  Ava and Nora Horton, Kimber, Kinzie and Kora Plemons; her Shenanigator friends, and of course, her Penny Peeps.  Penny was reunited with baby Karter on the day of her passing.

Friend's and family may come for visitation from 3:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 18, 2021 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL and 9 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2021.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Jennifer Sowell Glover officiating.  Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Fairview Heights, IL.
