Gail “Sonny” Henry Bailey, 88, of Kampsville, IL died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab.
He was born on September 14, 1930 in Kampsville, IL the son of Jesse and Lena Schuman Bailey. On October 25, 1958 Sonny married Geneva in Mississippi.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the Battleship Iowa, for 44 months and 10 days.
Sonny worked as a River Boat Captain for Chromalloy until he later retired. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kampsville and as well the Jerseyville VFW and American Legion in Kampsville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva Bailey of Kampsville; son, Bill Bailey (Tammy) of Kampsville; four grandchildren, Jesse Bailey (Jamie), Jacinda Hurley (Ross), Matthew Waters (Carly), and Julie Waters; four great grandchildren, Noah Bailey, Jude Bailey, Oliver Hurley, and Samuel Hurley; a sister, Zona Peek of Pittsfield, IL; and a brother, Lowell Bailey of Michael, IL.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kim Waters; a sister, Yvonne Christenson; and a brother, Beverly “Bud” Bailey.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at the Gress Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin, IL.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 10:00 am at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kampsville, IL. Burial will follow at the Silver Creek Cemetery in Kampsville.
