On April 23, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Jesus opened His arms and received Catherine M. Massalone, peacefully with her loved ones by her side at the age of 91. She was born August 14, 1926, the daughter of the late Gasper and Mary (Filardo) Palermo. On June 3, 1950 she married the love of her life, Angelo Massalone. He preceded her in death on September 2, 1994 and now they walk together hand in hand in heaven. Catherine graduated from the St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1947. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital for over 40 years retiring in 1987. She was a member of Wood River Roundhouse Senior Citizens where she was welfare secretary for many years as well as a member of senior citizen’s groups of East Alton. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maryann and Jack and son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Tarri and grandchildren, Angela, Dean, Damon (Amie), Thomas, Alyssa (Blake), and Joseph and great grandchildren, Nash, Addie and Ella Grace. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Margie Palermo and Carole Massalone and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, special friends, Liz and Vince and Lorraine and Martin, and her fur baby Tucker. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Palermo and a nephew, Tim Palermo. Thank you to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospice nurses Becky and Nancy for your compassionate care. A memorial mass will be held at a later date. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
