Shirley Jean Settles, 81, passed away peacefully at 11:35 p.m., Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at her residence, with her family at her side.She was born in Haypress, Illinois on January 15, 1937, the youngest, and last surviving of thirteen children born to Franklin and Pearl Dale.As a young lady, Shirley worked at Columbiana Seed Company, and it was there that she would meet her future husband.She married Joy Eldon Settles on Sept. 6, 1953 in Carrollton, Illinois, and their 64 year marriage was centered around faith, family and service to others.She was a dedicated and faithful pastors wife, and was at his side at he began serving his first congregation at Oak Grove Baptist Church near Patterson.   As time moved forward, the Lord took them on to the Fayette Southern Baptist Church, Athensville Baptist Church, Otterville Southern Baptist Church, and lastly, New Beginnings, Wings of a Dove in Jerseyville, all of which, Shirley was there.Her ministry to others was enhanced by her musical talents, as she served a music director at church, and played for many funerals and weddings through the years.   She, along with Joy, were part of the broadcast team on WJBM Radio, where they were honored to spread the word of God through their broadcast ministry.   She also was a gifted writer, and used those talents not only to write poetry, but recorded three gospel albums.Her life was truly one of service and he will be missed beyond words for those that were blessed to be in her presence.She is survived by her husband, Rev. Joy Settles; her three children and their spouses, Michael & Debbie Settles, Rebecaa Lynn and Bruce Pitchford, and Stacey and Mike Talbott; 10 Grandchildren; 18 Great Grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Marcus V. Herrin in 1975; seven sisters, Pauline, Beatrice, Louise, Margaret, Florence, Maxine and Mildred; and five brothers, Kenneth, Franklin, Pete, Leon and Hubert.Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Greenfield, with Rev. Ray Spellbrink officiating.Burial will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.Memorials may be given to her family to assist with medical expenses.
