Esther Elizabeth Cover, 88, passed away at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, December 31, 2017 at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital.

She was born March 1, 1929 in Luke, MD to the late Andrew Fredrick and Nettie Pearl (Duckworth) Maphis.

Esther married the late Rev. J. George Cover of Fayette County, PA on Sept. 9, 1950 in Cumberland, MD.  He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1998.

Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Royce Roy of Cottage Hills and Arlene and David Curry of Painesville, OH; 6 grandchildren, Victoria (Jeff) Haney of Granite City, Robert A. (Tisha) Roy of Alton, Sherrin (David) Nickell of Granite City, Ryan (Natalie) Roy of Granite City, Shawn (Jennifer) Van Huss of Mentor, and Shannon Van Huss of Painesville; 14 great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth M. (Ken) Glass of San Diego, CA; and a sister-in-law, Helen Maphis of Long Beach, CA.

She was Pastor’s wife from 1950-1978 at Central Assembly of God in Mentor, OH, where she taught Sunday school, led women’s ministry, taught in Christian school, played piano and led music ministry in their church.  She and her husband were missionaries from 1978-1993 in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and the Philippines.  After moving to Illinois in 1998 she was an active member of Bethel Pentecostal Church in Rosewood Heights, teaching the senior adult class and leading an Adult Bible Study at Township Village Apartments in East Alton.  She loved baking for her family and growing plants and flowers.  Esther cherished her time with her family and friends and treasured her faith in the Lord.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Tim Maphis and a half brother, Raymond Maphis.  

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4 at Bethel Pentecostal Church, where Rev. Royce Roy will officiate services at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5.  Burial will follow at Woodland Hill Cemetery in East Alton.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Pentecostal Church for Sierra Leone Missions.
