Melvin “Mel” D. Barry, 82, of Jerseyville, Illinois passed away in his home at 2:16 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2017.He was born on May 18, 1935 in Hardin the son of the late Maureen Barry.He married Marlene M. Magg on June 16, 1956. She preceded him in death on May 7, 2015.Mel served in the Armed Forces for 20 years working as a Jet Aircraft 1st Class Petty Officer Specialist on the F4J Phantom on squadron 213. After retiring from the military, he worked at Olin as a Mill-Rite He was a member on the Alton VFW Post 1308. Mel enjoyed gardening and was well known for his yard in Jerseyville. He was known as Mr. Fix It and enjoyed dancing, but most of all spending time with his family and friends.He is survived by three children, Debra (Gregory) Halemeyer, Rhonda Johnson and John Barry; 7 grandchildren, Shawn, Christopher, Patrick, Cheryl, Jennifer, Samantha, Dennis; 5 great-grandchildren, Emily, Haydon, Gavin, Logan, Devon and a twin brother, Marvin Barry.He is preceded in death by his wife and parents.Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Gress, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin with Pastor Paul D. Frazer officiating.Burial will follow at Hardin City Cemetery with military honors performed by the Brussels American Legion.Memorial contributions may be made to the Alton VFW Post 1308.Online condolences and guest book may be found at www.gresskallalschaaf.com
