Roger W. Back, 86, died at 1:57 a.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Born January 21, 1931 in Independence, WI, he was the son of Irvin and Vera (Bautch) Back. Mr. Back was a U.S. Army Korean Veteran and was a member of the former Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church and the former First Baptist Church in Alton. He retired from the Olin Corporation in 1998 after 20 years of service. Mr. Back was the ultimate “do it yourselfer” and recycler. He enjoyed wood crafting, renovating homes, working in his yard and spending time with his cats. On September 11, 1954 he married the former Marilu M. Baker in Alton. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Sharon Newman (Gerry Meklaus) of West Chester, PA, a son, Brian Back (Teresa) of Godfrey, three grandchildren, Monica Johnson of Godfrey, Laura Laird (Drew) of Godfrey and Lisa Carlin (Al) of Arnold, MO, four great grandchildren, Lily and Noah Johnson, Max and Ryan Laird, one step great grandchild, Caden Carlin, and a sister-in-law, Arlene Back of Chippewa Falls, WI. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Gaylord Back and a sister, Lois Komro. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2017.
