Eldon Smith

Eldon Lee Smith passed away at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, October 15, 2017 at OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. He was born September 13, 1926 in Alton to Estelle and Mary Ruth Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Alton and graduated from Alton High School in 1945. He was a standout member of the football team and his speed earned him the nickname “Rabbit.” He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Franklin Masonic Hall in Alton. For most of his life, he operated gas stations in Upper Alton; first a Shell station on Brown and Washington and later a Conoco station at Brown and Main Streets. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Jim) Maple and Jan (Kenny) Campbell, both from Godfrey, four grandchildren, Kim (Lee) Maple-Colley, Jaime (Robbie) Puterbaugh, Chad Campbell and Christopher Campbell all of Alton/Godfrey. His two great-grandchildren are Mallory Sumpter and Brody Puterbaugh. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Estelle Smith Jr. and a sister, Phyllis Thurm. Services will be private.
