Paul Cappel

Paul E. Cappel, 95, died at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.  Born December 24, 1921 in Golden Eagle, IL, he was the son of Gerhardt and Elizabeth (Gerdesmeyer) Cappel.  Paul served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in India and was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church.  He worked as a bookkeeper for Duncan Foundry until they closed and was a laborer with the Wood River Local 338.  On November 19, 1947 he married Dorothy L. Gilmore in Alton.  She preceded him in death on November 16, 2015.  Surviving are six nieces; Judy Kinder of Alton, Donna Doyle of Georgia, Diana Somrek of Burr Ridge, IL, Linda Eberlin of Brussels, IL, Polly DeBattista of Phoenix, AZ, and Patty Adams of Phoenix, AZ.  Along with his parents and and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Bill, Jerome and Raymond Cappel, two sisters, Anna Arnold and Mae Schobernd and one sister in infancy.  Visitation will be from 9:00-9:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 25, 2017 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey.  Father Steven Janoski will officiate.  Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.  Memorials may be made to BJC Hospice.  Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.  Online guestbook and information may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
