Harold H. Goebel, age 102, died Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Bethalto Care Center in Bethalto.

He was born March 18, 1915, in Prairietown, IL, the son of Edward and Anna (Renken) Goebel. He married the former Elveta Frillman on February 15, 1941, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Prairietown, IL. They were married sixty-one years before she died April 1, 2002.

Harold served in the U.S. Marine Corp in World War II. He was in the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Battalion, serving from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific, Saipan, Okinawa. He was in the 1st Battalion going into Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was dropped.

He worked at Olin Brass in East Alton for 37 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, serving in various positions. He was a member of the Men’s Club working on the sausage supper for many years, and he was a Trustee for the church a lot of years. He was a member of the Bethalto American Legion Post 214 and helped with many military funerals. He was a lifelong member of the Alton VFW Post 1308. He was a member of Bethalto Senior Citizens where he enjoyed playing pinochle with many friends. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann Keefe of Bethalto and a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Catherine Goebel of Godfrey. He is survived by four grandchildren: Dr. Brian (Janis) Keefe of Port Washington, New York, Angela (Michael) Goebel-Bain of Winthrop, ME, Matthew Goebel of Chesterfield, MO, and Jennifer (William) Mudge of Edwardsville, IL. He has seven great-grandchildren: Caroline Keefe, Rowan and Elsa Goebel-Bain, Clara and Maria Goebel, and Peyton and Ross Vucich. He is also survived by a sister, Florence Stieglitz, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and LaVerne Frillman, and a sister-in-law, Jean Frillman. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Wilfred Goebel and sister-in-law Elvira Goebel, a brother-in-law, Wilfred Stieglitz, a brother-in-law, Lloyd Frillman and a sister-in-law, Anita Frillman.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 17. 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto with Pastors Mark Hofferber and Willard Meyer officiating.

Burial will take place in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with Military Burial Rites provided by the Bethalto American Legion Post #214.

Memorials may be made to Bethalto Zion Lutheran Church and or Bethalto Zion Lutheran School.
