Roger David Brandt Sr., 78, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born June 23, 1938 in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of Frederick and Gladys (Space) Brandt. He served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and as a recruiter later (22 years) in all. He then worked for Olin Brass Mfg. as a security supervisor, retiring after 18 years of service. He enjoyed gardening and family gatherings. On February 23, 1973 he married the former Carolyn L. Moss in Hannibal, MO. She survives. Also surviving are four sons, Roger Brandt Jr. of Missouri, Alan McKay of Madison, IL, Noel McKay (Marty) of Alton, and Michael McKay of Wood River, five grandchildren, Marla Bryan, Heather Brandt, Julia Brandt, Cassandra McKay and Keegan McKay, and two sisters, Genora “Pat” Jones and Grace Dennhardt. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Frederick, Gerald, Gordon, and Norman Brandt, and five sisters, Geraldine Brandt, Norma Courtney, Angelia Brandt, Garnet Brandt, and Garland Smith. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. followed by full military honors by the VFW Post 1308 on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Pastor Steven Helfrich will officiate.
