Lyle Mark Zimmerman, 61, passed away at 1:36 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017, at his residence with his family by his side.
Lyle was born September 29, 1955 in Jerseyville. He was a son of the late Paul L. Zimmerman and Zita Louise (Simon) Zimmerman of Moro.
He and the former Nance M. Burgess of Bunker Hill, were married on May 17, 1979 in Wood River.
He was a Furnace Builder at Olin Corporation in East Alton, retiring in 2000 after 25 years of service.
Lyle was a man of many talents. He was known for being very active in his two daughter’s school activities, such as building an igloo out of sugar cubes, making rocks, building a solar cooker and making a mural of the planet earth in which he was filmed by the Illinois Board of Education for the pilot of the Parents as Partners Program.
Halloween was a favorite time of year for Lyle. He loved decorating with spider webs, pumpkins, always making sure that everyone had a pumpkin. Besides fishing, he was very happy to collect junk and surprised everyone when he would go to his junk pile and find what was needed to fix their broken whatever, then fixed it for them “what’s junk to one man is another man’s treasure”.
Lyle’s favorite love was his grandson Joshua. Spending time with him was pure joy. He had started teaching Joshua how to fix things, such as how to properly put in a fence post. You must put the dirt in then tap the dirt down a little bit at a time.
Besides his wife Nance, Lyle is survived by two daughters, Sarah Zimmerman and Jon Sanders of Bunker Hill, Amanda and Jason Myers of Wood River; a grandson, Joshua Mark Zimmerman; two sisters, Xandra and Alford “Buddy” Smoot of East Alton, Paula Fraley of Moro; four brothers, Leon and Georgia Zimmerman of Beaumont, TX, Lionel and Peggy Zimmerman of Jerseyville, Zane and Mary Zimmerman of Bunker Hill, Xavier and Tammy Zimmerman of Wood River.
Besides his father, Lyle was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Mary (Weishaupt) Simon of Batch Town, Walter and Bertha (Wilenburg) Zimmerman of Golden Eagle.
A celebration of Lyle’s life will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 30, 2017, with a service at 6:30 p.m., at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River.
Burial will be private.
Lyle will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorials may be given to the family.
