John M. Gutierrez, 87, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday, December 25, 2015 at Bethalto Care Center. He was born March 30, 1928 in St. John, Kansas the son of Rufus and Frances Gutierrez. He was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. After 30 years he retired in 1990 as a car inspector for the Illinois terminal Railroad. He was one of fourteen children, eight brothers and five sisters. In April of 1947 he married Helen (Gonzalez) and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Karen Taviner (Terry) of Alton and one son, Gregory Gutierrez (Gail) of Godfrey, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son Tommy Gutierrez. A memorial mass will be on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Burial will be at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton. A luncheon will be served immediately following the Mass at Liberty Bank; 3112 Godfrey Road, Godfrey, IL Memorials may be made to Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 519 E 4th Street, Alton, IL 62002.
