Joseph “Joe” L. Young Sr., 81, passed away at 11:15 pm Monday, November 14, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.
He was born on October 23, 1930 in Wood River, IL, the son of James L. and Ada S. (Turner) Young.
He married Sandra M. Eaton on September 28, 1990. She passed away in January 12, 2005.
Joseph served his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1954. He was a tool and die machinist at Olin Corporation for over 40 years, retiring in 1991. He was of the United Methodist faith, a member of the Westerner Club and the Alton VFW Post 1308. He enjoyed golfing, building puzzles and he loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Joseph “Joe” and his partner, Jon Lyerla Jr of Springfield, IL, Debbie and Andy Gripp of Virden, IL, Janet and Bill McCready of Virden, IL, Michael L. Young of Bloomington, IL, Shelia and Randy Karrick of Virden, IL and Jeffery L. Young of Wood River; his stepchildren, Linda and Dave Lawshe of Bethalto, Paula Barton of Alton, Ted Kelley of Wood River, Jamie and Toni Adams of East Alton, Melissa Adams of East Alton and Brian and Heather Adams of East Alton; twenty four grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; a brother, Allen Wayne Young of Sacramento, CA; a sister, Sidna D. Young of Springfield, IL and two nephews and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, Donald Young, stepson, Gerald Kelley, stepdaughter, Tracy Adams, two grandchildren, Kristy L McCready and Jacob A. Karrick and a niece.
Visitation will be from 11 am until services at 1 pm Friday, November 18, 2011 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Terry Turner officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites by Alton VFW Post 1308.
