David Pegue

Fieldon |

David A. Pegue, 72, died at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri after a long fought battle with cancer.

He was born on March 28, 1950 in Carrollton, Illinois, one of five children born to the late Francis James and Edith Marie (Telkamp) Pegue, and grew up in Jersey County where he graduated in 1968 from Jersey Community High School.

He married the former Tonda Lyles on November 30, 1974 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fieldon. Throughout their 48 years of marriage, they were blessed with four children and their grandchildren that followed, sharing in many wonderful memories together as a family.

A country boy at heart, David loved nothing more than spending time outdoors. Whether it was working the land as a farmer or spending time with the boy’s deer, coon and coyote hunting.

He was a devoted family man, a loyal friend and a dedicated public servant – serving as Road Commissioner for English Township for 25 years.

Throughout his years with the Township, David always gave 110%. He spent many sleepless nights tending to his corner of the world, and was constantly “running the roads” and took pride in taking care of his people.

He enjoyed his early morning coffee talks at the roundtable at Fran and Marilyn’s, where he garnered the nickname of “Doppler Dave” for always keeping a watchful eye on the area’s weather forecasts.

Despite the challenges life placed before him, his strength and determination never wavered. He consistently put the needs of others before his own. He would give you the shirt off his back, not for a “thank you” or a favor in return, but simply out of the kindness of his heart. He will be fondly remembered for his love of the land, love for his family and love for his community. While his passing from this life will certainly leave a void, anytime you can’t find the TV remote or find yourself stuck behind a slow moving car, just remember that David is still with you and looking down with that infamous David Pegue grin.

Surviving are his wife, Tonda Pegue of Fieldon; two daughters and sons in-law, Alison and Jeremy Sibert and Lauren and Luke Kallal, all of Jerseyville; two sons and daughters in-law, Matthew and Niki Pegue of Jerseyville and Jared and Carly Pegue of Fieldon. The proud Pop-Pop to his nine grandchildren, Harrison, Reagan and Kennedy Sibert; Rory, Colt and Duke Kallal; Karlee and Weston Pegue; Wade Pegue; and one more grandchild due to arrive in June.

He is also survived by two sisters and a brother in-law, Rose Marie and Dick Niemeyer of Fieldon and Phyllis Matteuzzi of Webster Groves, Missouri; a brother and sister in-law, Jim and Debbie Pegue of Grafton; two brothers in-law, Gary Herdon of Phoenix, Arizona and Roy Young of Jerseyville; as well as a brother in-law and sister in-law, Jimmie and Sandra Lyles of Kane.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Herdon;  his father in-law and mother in-law, James “Shack” and Alice “Toots” Lyles; a brother in-law, Jon Matteuzzi and a sister in-law, Barbara Lyles.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m., Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fieldon.
