Robert Sams

Jerseyville |

Robert Eugene Sams, 91, died at 7:44 a.m., Saturday, January 15, 2022, at St. Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall.

He was born in English Township, Jersey County, Illinois on August 25, 1930, one of three sons born to Clarence Haney and Lillian (Lane) Sams.

Following his graduation from Jersey Community High School, Bob married the love of his life, Alice Imogene Huff, on April 1, 1949, in Kemper. Bob and Imogene were blessed with 68 years of marriage and the joys of raising their two children and the memories shared with their grandchildren that followed. She preceded him in death on May 1, 2017.

He was employed as a Mold Maker at Owens-Illinois, dedicating 44 years of service, prior to his retirement in 1992.

Bob was a true American cowboy, and a lifetime member of the Jerseyville Saddle Club, where he enjoyed the many memories he was able to create with his family and friends. While his passing will certainly leave a void in the hearts of all those who loved him, there is comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his wife and son, who have gone before him.

Bob worked tirelessly to provide the best life for his family. He never knew a stranger and welcomed everyone with his big smile. He had a heart of gold and lived each and every day of his life to the fullest.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Mike Meuth of Jerseyville; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and David Fink of Jerseyville, Stacey Meuth and her fiancé, Christian Brooks, of White Hall, Mary and Matt Capps of Jerseyville, Stephanie and Harold Brown of Alton and Laura and Tony Korte of O’Fallon, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren, Cory (Samantha) Rowling, John Wayne Fink of Jerseyville, Ben Fink of Jerseyville, Emily Fink of Jerseyville, Ethan Capps of Jerseyville, Sara Brooks of White Hall and Lincoln Hamilton of Alton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Haney Sams and Lillian Depper, his wife, Imogene,  a son, Michael Lynn Sams on March 14, 2014; as well as two brothers and a sister-in-law, Clarence Junior and Mary Jane Sams and Lloyd Sams.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Monday. Father Hyland Smith will officiate.

In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to Jersey Community High School FFA or to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School.
