Eugene R. Bertels, 88, of Dorsey, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 9:11 pm at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born on April 27, 1932 in Dorsey, the son of Roy and Verna (Heuer) Bertels. He married Dolores F. Perry on October 8, 1955 at the Emmaus Lutheran Church in Dorsey.
Eugene is a United States Army Veteran and served during the Korean War. He was a farmer all of his life. He worked for Aljets Garage for 21 years as a mechanic before becoming a mail carrier for USPS for an additional 21 years. He was President and Treasurer at Emmaus Lutheran Church for several terms, served as an elder and sang in their choir. Eugene was active with the Dorsey Volunteer Fire Department for 64 years and well known in the Dorsey community. He enjoyed reading, especially Wisconsin Magazine, gardening, wood working, traveling, collecting cans to recycle for the church, farming, and spending time with his family and friends.
Along with his wife, Dolores, he is survived by his son, Ricky (Janice) Bertels of Warrensburg, MO, five grandchildren, Mark Easley of NE, Cindy (Ben) Smith of Warrensburg, MO, Paula (Joe) Strahmann of Iowa, and Jason (Elizabeth) Easley of Barnhard, MO; nieces and nephews, Marsha (Jeff) Vore of Bethalto, Myrna Homm of St. Louis, Mary (Mark) Collins of Foristell, MO, and Renee (Bob) Church of O’Fallon, MO; four great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Richard “Dale” (Pat) Perry of St. Charles, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Verna; in-laws, Harlan and Zona Perry; a sister, Margie Homm; and a daughter, Brenda Bertels.
Visitation will be on Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 11 am until time of service at 1 pm at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Dorsey. Pastor David Kern will officiate. Burial will follow at Emmaus Lutheran Cemetery.
