John Moore

Marine |

John Alvin Moore, 89, died at 10:46 p.m., Monday, August 12, 2019, at Evelyn's House in Creve Coeur, Missouri.

He was born in Jerseyville on January 9, 1930, to the late Eldon and Catherine (Monk) Moore and grew up, along with his two brothers, on the family farm in Jersey County.

After graduating High School, John went on to attend Southern Illinois University before being drafted into the United States Army. Upon his return home from the military, he returned to college, earning his Master's of Education, later obtaining an endorsement as an Educational Specialist.

He married the former Mildred Spriggs on September 9, 1952, in Jersey County. John and Spriggy spent the early years of their marriage in Jersey County, where John worked as a teacher at the Kane Elementary School. In 1965, they relocated their family to Marine, Illinois, where John began his long and proud career with the Triad Community Unit School District #2, retiring as Principal at the Marine Elementary School, after nearly 25 years with the district.

John's childhood years working on the family farm instilled in him a strong work ethic and commitment to his family and his faith. He worked tirelessly to provide the best possible life for his wife and three sons, inspired countless youth throughout his career as an educator, and was devout in his Christian faith. He was a longtime member of the Marine Christian Church, prior to its closing; and most recently was a member of the Highland Southern Baptist Church, lending his talents at the organ at both churches.

In his spare time, he enjoyed time spent with his family, as well as swimming and gardening.

Surviving is three sons and a daughter-in-law, John David Moore of Bloomington; Timothy and Beth Moore of Batavia and Jeffrey Moore of Jerseyville; four grandchildren, John Moore, Ruth Rearick, Ryan Moore, and Lindsay Martin; a great-grandson, Carl; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mildred "Spriggy" Moore; as well as two brothers, Eldon E. Moore, and Roger L. Moore.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 19, 2019, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday with Pastor Billy Blackmon officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
