Monica Hagen

Golden Eagle |

Monica Marie Hagen departed this life on September 7, 2018.

Monica was an equal partner in the life she and her husband, William, created in their 68 years together. They strived for excellence at what they did. They made a large difference in the lives of many and are lovingly remembered for it.

Monica was born May 5, 1931 to Albert and Marie (Schobernd) Fortschneider and was raised and schooled in Brussels, Illinois. She married William G. Hagen on June 10, 1950 and began their adventure together. They did not define their respective roles. Their gifts were complimentary. Monica provided the emotional and spiritual foundation that anchored their lives. She exuded warmth, strength, competence, and flexibility. She was mutli-talented and capable of handling any crisis thrown her way. A superb natural organizer, she was able to create time for homemaking, management, child rearing, entertaining, athletics, gardening, and friendships. But perhaps the greatest gift was the fact she made everyone with whom she came in contact feel special and was happiest when she could do something for someone.

Monica worked for the United States Postal Service, partnered their agricultural projects, was a member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister, member of Westlake Country Club, past president of the Calhoun County Extension Service, past president of St. Mary's Altar Society, member of Brussels American Legion Auxiliary Post 685, past secretary of the Calhoun County Unit of the American Cancer Society, member of Calhoun County Historical Society.

She is survived by her son, William Geary and wife, Beverly Hagen; her daughter, Lisa Anne and husband, Paul Karpowicz; four grandchildren, W. Christopher (Jill) Hagen, Matthew (Meaghan) Hagen, Mary Kathryn (Scott) Young, Michael (Devon) Karpowicz; six great grandchildren, Peter Young, Caroline Young, Alexandrea Karpowicz, William Bridger Karpowicz, James Shephard Karpowicz, and Atticus Hagen. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Patricia Fortschneider and a niece, Kim Fortschneider; two nephews, Michael and Daniel Fortschneider; three sisters-in-law, Gen Gearing, Charlotte Jacobs, and Kathleen Weatherford; three dedicated caregivers, Rhonda McIntyre, Dan Pohlman, and JoAnn Nolte.

Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Brussels.

Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Brussels.

Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to: St. Mary's Cemetery, American Legion Auxiliary Post 685, Calhoun Historical Society or a charity of one's choice.
