BETHALTO - Seventh- and eighth-grade students from Zion Lutheran School recently traveled to both Missouri and Arkansas for a field trip experience that combined faith and science.

The youth engaged their five senses in challenging ways, students, teachers and chaperones expanded their knowledge during this time outside the classroom.

In Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the group visited the Great Passion Play Complex. During their walk-through tour of the Bible Museum, they saw replicas of the Old Testament tabernacle to scale, a Bethlehem inn, Jesus walking on the water, the Last Supper, Calvary, and Jesus’ tomb — complete with actors in character telling the stories. They also attended the Passion Play, now in its 51st year of presenting a live dramatization of the last week of Jesus’ life at an outdoor amphitheater.

"I really enjoyed this trip,” said Josh Fields, eighth-grade student, and son of David and Heidi Fields of Hartford. “I thought it was especially nice to see so many people volunteer their time to share, in a drama, the experiences of Jesus in the Bible."

The students' stop at Meramec Caverns provided a memorable science lesson and there was discussion about the uniqueness of God’s creation. The students toured the 4.6-mile cavern system in the Ozarks, near Stanton, Missouri, and saw formations left from the erosion of large limestone deposits.

"I thought it was really cool to see all of the crazy stalactites and stalagmites,” said Haleigh Knipping, an eighth-grade student, and daughter of Troy and Jennifer Knipping of Worden, Illinois. “We learned that it takes thousands of years for these to form."

“These experiences bring the Bible to life for our students and help them appreciate God’s creation in new ways,” said Beth Huffman, seventh-grade homeroom, literature and American history teacher at Zion.
