If you have an old bicycle in the garage or basement that is just collecting dust, the Alton YWCA is launching a program that could put it to good use. No BMX or Mountain Bikes are needed, but donations of bikes with 10-speeds or more are being taken now through June 15 at the "Y" on 3rd Street, according to Wellness and Recreation Program Coordinator Claire Cooper.
They are also looking for volunteers with mechanical and riding skills to help out. The Bike Lab begins June 25, and the kids will be able to take their bike home at the end of the program. Cooper says the donated bicycles should have frames without breaks, fractures, or significant stress points. Frames should be straight, without bends, and in good condition with all spokes intact.
