More than 500 graves will be decorated next month at the Alton National Cemetery on Pearl Street as part of the Wreaths Across America program. For about two decades, the decorations have been placed at the Arlington National Cemetery and others across the country and this will be the seventh year for decorations in Alton.
Alton resident Margaret Hopkins is organizing the effort again and says that it is breathtaking to watch veterans and local school children transform the cemetary into a large memorial.
Students from St. Mary's School will assist in laying the wreaths this year. The ceremony itself is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday December 14, and should last about a half hour at Alton National Cemetery. Donations can be made to help offset the costs of the wreaths which is $5,400. A suggested $10 donation can be mailed to Alton Wreaths Across America at P.O. Box 181 Alton, IL, 62002.
