Last fall the American Red Cross decided to pull the plug on the Alton office as part of a large-scale restructuring.  One of the services the agency is best known for is connecting displaced families with the services they need after a fire.  One local fire chief says six months in to the reorganization, he has not noticed a decline in response.

Godfrey Fire Protection District Chief Eric Kambarian tells The Big Z he summoned the Red Cross for help after a fire at a group home a couple of months ago.

A Red Cross spokesman says the volunteers now keep their response supplies with them, so they can go straight to an emergency, rather than having to go to the office and then to the scene.
