Road construction season is under way, with the construction industry and the cops preaching safety in work zones.   Mike Sturino, president of the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association, says distracted driving is a problem. “Don’t pick up the phone in a work zone, ever, not even hands free. It’s illegal. Never surf the internet. Never text. Don’t send e-mails,” he said.

State police will have a special detail this year to catch speeders and other violators in construction zones.   Illinois had 24 fatalities in work zones last year. Two were workers, one was a pedestrian and the rest were drivers or passengers.
