Illinois’ workers’ compensation system needs an overhaul – most business people agree on that. But the witness list for Tuesday’s Illinois House hearing on the subject, in a rare “committee of the whole,” carried mostly injured workers from Illinois and other states. Only one of those business interests was there, among 19 speakers. House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) says that’s a problem.

“We need to hear from the other side,” Durkin said. “From the employers (and) the job creators.”
“Gov. Rauner is right,” said Greg Baise, head of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, that one business representative today. “If we don’t get this, then we’re not going to be able to attract (businesses). Manufacturing? Huge deal. Retail side? Decisions on whether they’re going to build 15 stores or 12 stores in a state.”
Durkin hoped the session would be a beginning, not an end.
