The teachers union in the Wood River Hartford Elementary School District has been working without a contract since August. Negotiations have been ongoing, but the district reportedly refused to meet with the union without a federal mediator present, after the mediator was called out of town last week.
The school district's attorney began a process usually used during the beginning of a strike process called "a public posting process," but the attorney denied that the move meant a strike was coming soon. Illinois Education Association Regional Director Ric Stephenson says the union has not filed an intent to strike notice and hopes both sides can meet soon to hammer out a deal. A bargaining session with the mediator is tentatively set to take place December 14th.
