A Granite City woman has been sentenced to 22 years in prison after her conviction for first-degree murder earlier this year in Granite City. 21-year-old Breanna Maldonado was sentenced Monday in Madison County Circuit Court. She could have faced up to 60 years in prison.
Authorities say on October 6, 2013, Maldonado was transporting a 26-year-old male passenger to a local hospital to deal with an injury he suffered earlier in the evening, when she stopped the car at a Granite City gas station. She and another male in the car, 21-year-old Antonio Carlin and a 20-year-old female began a verbal altercation with people at the business and police say Maldonado and Carlin each stabbed someone in the group. Killed was 23-year-old Kaitlin Juenger, who police found lying on the parking lot of the station when they arrived. She died at the scene. A male who was stabbed was taken to an area hospital and has since recovered. The four people in the car were taken into custody and Maldonado and Carlin were charged the next day. Maldanado will be required to serve 100% of her sentence.
