A Wood River woman could go to jail for up to 10 years for her role in a fatal accident last October. 23 year old Brittney R. Butler of the 200 block of Whitelaw pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated driving under the influence in a crash that killed 35 year old Jeffrey Davis of Alton. The crash occurred on Route 143 near Bender Drive in the early morning hours of October 22, 2010.

Prosecutors agreed to the plea deal that would cap the maximum requested sentence at 10 years, with a minimum of three years. Without the deal, Butler could have faced up to 14 years in prison. Butler had two previous felony drug convictions, and was on probation for those when the crash occurred. Her probation has since been revoked. Butler originally told authorities she and Davis had been out drinking and he was driving the car. But, prosecutors say Davis was found buckled in the front passenger seat following the crash and Butler changed her story. Police say Butler's blood alcohol level was at point-1-6 at the time of the crash, which is twice the legal limit for intoxication. She was also under the influence of marijuana. A sentencing date has not been set.
