It’s not too early to look back and say 2012 was a bad year on the farm. “We can certainly say it was a crummy year with respect to the yields,” says Brad Schwab, chief crop statistician in Illinois for the USDA. “We’re currently at 98 bushels per acre statewide average yield for corn (and) 39 for soybeans, so those two statistics in themselves paint a very grim picture from the drought that we had this last summer.”
